What brought me to zombies…
I’ve always loved the idea of the apocalyptic world but when
you add zombies it creates a constant sense of danger. Never did I see myself writing a book.
Shortly after joining the Army in 2005, I was flying around
on a long drawn out mission. Pilot next
to me was a zombie fan and started talking about movies. I, also being a zombie fan started going off
on books and movies that I had watch.
When not actively busy, zombie conversations became the norm and one day
my crew chief said. “Sir, you should write a book.” Next thing I know I’m writing Dead Air.
Dead Air was influenced by Joe Mckinney, author of Dead City. He’d used his experiences in law enforcement
and was actually a great inspiration for writing. I used what I knew best, flying helicopters
some combat ops on the ground and Thailand (My wife is from there.)
What I noticed for most zombie books is that the story takes
place after the outbreak, days, weeks or years. I’ve always wanted to see chaos in the
streets, the fall of civilization and the spread of the outbreak on an epic
scale, “Happening in a matter of days.”
Also, thanks to my many conversations with fellow pilots and crew
chiefs, I wanted to talk about post z-day.
Post z-day was a favorite subject while writing. What would we as an aircrew do? The world is falling apart, we as a military
has evaporated after a long painful fight.
Naturally take helicopters and do our best. We have the knowledge, the manpower, parts
and fuel to have a sustainable fleet. So
adding it to the story was a must.
Dead Air was originally released on Kindle Self Publishing
in August 2011. It started off as just
for fun. Next thing I know J.D. Villines
author of Dead Bangkok and now mentor wrote me a review. Now it was published under a sub branch of
Silver Birch Press, my fledgling press is called Silver Dagger Press. First book for SDP and not the last.
My goal for Dead Air was to make the book as realistic as
possible. I used experiences I’ve had in
the military to create the character Sai and Wan. Things they feel, things they do is what
I’ve seen and felt. Imagine being 20
years old and going on 4 hrs a sleep a day for weeks at a time and suddenly
sleep stops for 2 days or more. Then you
find yourself as a leader trying to make decisions. Stress, fatigue and training the characters
have is real. For example, Sai is a
pilot, a CW3. His job is to fly
helicopters, he is not Rambo on the ground, door kicker, he does not know
everything about every type of ground weapon.
Knowledgably on the subject, but by no means a subject matter
expert. In the beginning he starts off
relying heavily on Thai Soldier, Sgt. Wan.
A “Ground Guy” and a NCO. Sgt.
Wan and Sai form a friendship that will eventually help the two create a future
for the survivors near Bangkok.
FERAL, a book that is near final edits was actually
conceived by J.D. Villines. He recruited
me to co write this tale of two children surviving in LA with no combat
training, no special skills, just an instinct to survive. He said he loved how Dead Air had pretty
intense action and when the book comes out I guess you’ll see the heart
pounding action that takes place. Feral
has many characters that the kids encounter ranging from deranged serial
killers to the Jaguar Warriors. Also
characters from both Dead Air and Dead Bangkok will make cameo
appearances. Why cameos? Because it is always fun to see authors reuse
characters. I myself went back to old
books while reading another book to see how authors used these characters. Think of it like a hide and seek game. FERAL
will be out sometime early August and as for the movie, the date is still
TBD.
BRAINS MAGAZINE.
I also write for Brains Magazine, which was created by CW
Bier. My articles are survivor based on
subject you could find yourself in.
Think Hurricane Katrina, mass evacuation of New Orleans via UH-60 Blackhawk. Now picture yourself in Los Angeles, you’ve made it to a (FOB)
forward operating base. Helicopters are
leaving every few seconds and the next thing you know it is your turn to be
onboard. Naturally I’m not going to let
you fly away and live happily ever after that easy. A TFR has been set up over the city in my
scenario, (Temporary Flight Restriction.)
No fly-zone basically, which are all over the place, Washington
D.C., Disneyland,
and for our case a zombie infested city.
We are pretending a no-fly zone is set up and any aircraft leaving
without the proper code is shot down in order to “contain” the virus/zombie
outbreak. You are shot down, and you
find yourself having to give aid to a crewmember with real combat life saving
techniques. Basic tools you can use as a
civilian to aid in your escape to safety and how to signal helicopters nearby
to extract you. It’s extremely
non-classified article and serves to help average Joe if they are ever in that situation.
That is just one of several articles.
Night of the Living Dead 2012
I was cast as the (Pilot Ghoul) and filming will begin in
August of 2012.
Dead Air: First Flight
Script is in the works.
Dead Air: Tales of the Apocalypse
Will be
available this summer. Tales of survivor
from the “extras” within the Dead Air novel.
Many of the Dead Air Facebook fans have cameos.
Dead Air: ANTHOLOGIES
This is
something no other book has done to the best of my knowledge. I gave people around the world a chance to
enter the Dead Air Universe and write about what they would do based on a
situation I gave them. All of them have
the same zombies, all of them have the timeline that was set within Dead Air:
First Flight and most importantly this will be a work of many styles. I have people from Australia, Korea,
UK, US, Philippines and
many others writing on this. This should
be available by November 2012.
Facebook Pages I host
Dead Air
We try
to post daily zombie survival scenarios.
We don’t hold back on scenarios that are a real possibility. Some may be disturbing to some readers, not
in a sick way, but in the idea that they may have to decide the fate of their children. Think, you are stuck in the city, to the east
is a school with one child, to the west a school with another. You must decide where to go first. Of course some are much more graphic and
decisions are even harder. We also talk
a lot about society. Most overlook the
fact that everyday issues will continue to exist post z-day. Abortion, religion, thieves, child molesters,
food shortages, serial killers, even elections within a community!
ZSA Global Zombie News
Miami events sparked me
to create this page. We try to confirm
all “events” that take place by filtering out false info. If they bite, we got it. I also plan on making this like a MOCK news
channel, poking fun of major news stations such as Fox News, CNN, MSNBC and the
BBC. We will have fun debates with
characters from all sides attacking each other.
Characters will parody both liberal and conservative news host, think
Glenn Beck vs Rachael Meddow .
Zombie Kindle
This is
open for all authors and indie authors to post links to their zombie
books. A good way of focusing your search from the latest zombie
novels.
